Designing has always been a passion ever since I was a kid. I drew all day, made myself and the family paper slippers, and made clothes for my dolls or stuffed animals. Determined to study fashion design since high school, went to FIDM for fashion design, but randomly got into footwear industry instead.
Designed for few companies, covering different genders, and wide range of categories. From women's dress shoes to kids in every categories. After many years of footwear designing on paper and computer, I felt the need of being able to design and make something completely with my two hands from start to finish.
So I looked into handbag, took a pattern making class at Arsutoria in Milan, then hands on workshop in Taipei. The workshop in Taipei called Drifter introduced me to vegtanned leather, as well as handcrafting leather. Leathercrafting gives me so much joy, I know I've found the new passion that I've been searching for a while.
Nature's way is the best way.
As I started hand making bags from beginning to finish, I've learned so much, and still constantly learning. Appreciating time and effort put into each bag, skills accumulated over time of practice, quality of the leather as well as each components used. In love with the coolness of how the vegtanned leather ages, which adds personal character to each piece. Observe and be more aware of our surroundings, which lead to the realization of how harmful fast fashion has brought us and the Mother Earth. All these things that I have neglected before, now brought closer, but still learning.
My perspective of value in everything has changed dramatically as I slow down to re-evaluate. As if I was standing still inside a subway station during rush hour, trying to figure out my way out. This craft taught me how to appreciate, be patient, humble, and simply enjoy doing what I do. Truly grateful that I have found LeatherCraft and hope to stay on this path forever...
